Not from me. You get no immunity from me, you piece of shit. Every criminal I have put in prison, every cop that owes me a favor, every creep and scumbag that walks the streets for a living will know the name of Verbal Kint. Now you talk to me, or that precious immunity they seem so fit to grant you won’t be worth the paper the contract put out on your life is printed on. - Chazz Palminteri as Dave Kujon in The Usual Suspects
I’ve mentioned this before, but tickets are now on sale. I can’t wait to see one of my favorite films from the 90s, with one of its stars there to talk about the film. Gotta love The Usual Suspects. Gotta love the Alamo Drafthouse, too. Gotta love Chazz Palminteri (A Bronx Tale, Bullets Over Broadway). This is a no-brainer. Go get your tickets while you still can. I’m buying mine right now.
Yep, screenwriter Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is coming back to Austin. Black will appear at this year’s Austin Film Festival, where he has been a panel staple in the past. I don’t know about everybody else, but Black is one of my favorite reads. I actually enjoy the leeway he takes in his scripts, and think his shit is ridiculously engaging, not to mention just plain ol’ fun. I have definitely borrowed a few tricks from Black, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Since I’ve never seen him speak before, somehow, I will definitely be there this time around. Definitely.
One of the great things about Austin is its free movie screenings. Thanks to the likes of Aint It Cool News and Alamo Drafthouse, among others, these type of events go down all the time. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to get on the Pineapple Express list, even though I missed out on the Tropic Thunder one. You can still go to either and wait for a stand-by ticket, but you’ll need two hours and some luck to pull that off. If I would just hurry up and buy my damn Fantastic Fest badge. Next week, I’m finally buying one next week. That and trying a little harder to pull some strings and get on all of these lists.
The Paramont is currently running its Summer Film Series. I went to see Chinatown earlier this summer, but perhaps the showing I am most psyched about is Vertigo, one of my all-time favorite movies. Vertigo shows three times over the weekend of August 22. I’ve never seen it on the big screen, but with the vivid colors and locations I expect it to look fantastic. If you live in the area, definitely check out this series. There’s definitely something for film lovers of all sorts
I love the Alamo Drafthouse. I especially dig their special events. I’m lucky enough to actually live within walking distance of the Lake Creek location.
Next month, I’m definitely going to go see The Usual Suspects, one of my all-time faves, with special guest Chazz Palminteri. Unfortunately, tickets aren’t on sale yet. I’m also looking forward to the Pinneapple Express, because the Apatow crew has been on fire lately (other than Walk Hard). I wonder what will be better: Pinneapple Express or Tropic Thunder? August is going to be a good month at the Alamo.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) John Smith: Did you hear the helicopter dropping me off that night for our anniversary dinner? Jane Smith: No. Oh, percussion grenades. I was partially deaf that evening. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) Jack Sparrow: Gentlemen, I wash my hands of this weirdness. Troy (2004) Priam: [kneels, kisses Achilles' hands] Achilles: Who are you? Priam: I have endured what no one on earth has endured before. I kissed the hands of the man who killed my son. Achilles: [realizes, stands abrubtly] Priam? How did you get in here? Priam: I know my country better than the Greeks, I think. Achilles: [walks forward, lifts Priam] You are a brave man. I could have your head on a spit in the blink of an eye. Priam: Do you really think death frightens me now? I watched my eldest son die, watched you drag his body behind your chariot. Give him back to me. He deserves a proper burial, you know that. Give him to me. Achilles: He killed my cousin. Priam: He thought it was you. How many cousins have you killed? How many sons and fathers and brothers and husbands? How many, brave Achilles?
